As the holidays approach and cold weather sets in, many people find themselves in need, making this the perfect time to introduce—or reintroduce—your children to volunteerism.

There are plenty of ways to help out in the North Texas community, whether your child is interested in helping children, animals, the elderly, the homeless or another population.

Helping Children:

When you work with Community Partners of Dallas, you help underprivileged children who may need some extra love during the holidays. Your kids can help make cards or holiday bags for the children served by the agency.

The Rise School offers early education services to children, including those with disabilities. Volunteers get to work with the kids and learn about differences in learning.

Helping the Homeless: 

With Dallas LIFE, you can work as a family to serve meals to the homeless over the holidays.

Volunteer with Family Gateway and learn more about homelessness and its effects. Kids will also get to interact in activities with other kids at the shelter.

Helping the Elderly:

Deliver meals on a “Locomotion Party Bus” with Meals on Big Wheels, followed by a tour of the volunteer kitchen.

Nursing homes in every neighborhood are filled with people who would love a visit from a child this holiday. Contact a home in your area to discover opportunities to visit with or sing to the residents.

Helping Animals: 

If your kid has a heart for animals, have them check out the SPCA—there are a variety of programs, including playing with dogs and making cat toys.

Operation Kindness, the largest no-kill shelter in Texas, has plenty of opportunities for kids to pitch in and help the furry friends who have found their way to the shelter this holiday.
